Recording the Final Mix Output from PARIS to an ADAT with the EDS-ADI-01 ModuleBy Craig Anderton
The PARIS EDS-ADI-01 MEC module not only allows synchronous transfers of track data to and from the ADAT, but can be used to record other sources available from the Patch Bay.Tip: Since the ADAT takes a few seconds to sync, it is best to leave some blank space at the beginning of the PARIS Project to insure that all of your mix data is recorded by the ADAT when you do the mixdown. You can automate this recording, eliminating the need for adding pre-roll to the Project; separate instructions appear below.
This example presumes that you are using the first ADAT in a multi-ADAT chain. If you need to record to a different ADAT, you can use the "Target ADAT" parameter to select which ADAT will be used for recording.
To record the final mix from PARIS to two tracks of your ADAT, do the following:
- Record, edit and mix your Project in PARIS as usual.
- Open the Patch Bay Window.
- Drag the MEC Modules object and the Sub-Mixer #1 object onto the desktop.
- Connect patch cables from the L/R mix outputs of Sub-Mixer #1 to the inputs on the MEC Modules object where your ADAT is located (typically, this is the first object, occupying inputs/outputs #1 through 8). For the example, we'll assume that this is true, and that you want to record your mix onto ADAT tracks #1 and #2.
Patching the PARIS Main mix to tracks 1 and 2 of the ADAT
- Open the ADAT Transport Window.
- Set the Tape Start Point parameter to match the desired start time on the ADAT tape.
The mix is set up to record at 15:30 on the ADAT tape.
- Press the Sync button in the ADAT Transport Window.
- Arm tracks 1 and 2 on the ADAT for recording. You can do this with the hardware buttons on the ADAT itself or in the ADAT Transport Window.
- Press the Locate button on the Control 16 to shuttle the ADAT tape to the starting location for the mixdown.
- Press play on the Control 16-the ADAT will also go into play at this time.
- Press the Record button on the ADAT hardware or in the ADAT Transport Window.
Your mix will be recorded to the selected channels. Since PARIS is not doing an import/export transfer, you need to control the ADAT transport manually. When your PARIS Project is finished playing, stop the ADAT and take the tracks out of record mode.
If you know the exact length of the Project you want to record to the ADAT, you can use the Punch feature found in the ADAT Transport Window. The track and Patch Bay setup is the same as above.
To do the punch recording:
- Set the start and end times for the recording by clicking on the red numeric readouts below the ADAT transport controls.
The ADAT is set up to record 4:15 of music, starting at 15:30 on the ADAT tape.
- A dialog box opens, allowing you to enter the start and/or end time for the recording. Click OK to confirm your entry.
- Press the Punch button in the ADAT Transport Window.
- Press the Sync button (if it is not already pressed from the example above).
- Press play on the PARIS transport. The ADAT will enter and exit record mode at the specified times.
