Using the PARIS A/D Converters to Record to an ADAT

You can use the PARIS A/D converters instead of the onboard converters when recording to an ADAT. What follows is a simple method for recording long performances to ADAT tape that can later be edited in PARIS.

Note: You can substitute the MEC main inputs or MEC 24bit 8-in modules in this setup. Using the MEC main analog inputs, a maximum of four audio signals can be recorded. If you have an input module, you can record up to eight signals simultaneously.

  1. Connect the ADAT to the MEC with the sync cable and the optical cables

  2. Patch the audio source into your interface. (presuming that you are using the MEC main inputs, connect audio cables to inputs 1-2-3-4)

  3. Open the Patch Bay

  4. Drag the MEC Master, MEC Modules and Mixer objects onto the desktop

  5. Clear the default patches from the MEC Master going into the Mixer

  6. Connect the MEC Master inputs 1 through 4 to the first four inputs on the MEC Modules object (this is your ADAT interface's inputs)

  7. Connect the outputs (1 through 4 in this example) of the MEC Modules to the inputs of the Mixer object so you can monitor the ADAT audio as it is recorded. (For simplicity, connect them to the same numbered inputs, 1 through 4. In reality, you can use any open channels on the Mixer, or use the Auxes for monitoring.)

  8. In the Project Window, set the Control Surface Mode to "Live Mix" to allow you to monitor the ADAT's audio outputs

  9. In the Mixer Window, press the "L" button in each channel that you want to monitor (1 through 4 in this example)

  10. Open the ADAT Transport Window

  11. Click the Record LEDs for the tracks on the ADAT that you want to record

  12. Check the ADAT's front panel; if the "Input" readout does not say "Digital", press the Digital Input button

  13. Play your audio source; you should see the audio coming into PARIS being metered on the ADAT hardware's meters

  14. Adjust the playback level of the source audio material to avoid distortion when recording

  15. Use the ADAT Transport Window controls to start playback and recording on the ADAT
To substitute a MEC 8-in module, instead of patching from the MEC Master object, patch cables from the MEC Modules object points 9 through 16 to the inputs 1 through 8. The rest of the setup is similar to the steps above.
